WELCOME

January, 2010

Welcome from the Principal,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to this wonderful, unique place where God is present at all times.  Jesus is spoken here, lived here, and learned here.

Religion plays a major role in all areas of the curriculum.  It is with Jesus at their sides that our children are able to learn in a quiet, prayerful, respectful atmosphere.   We strive to teach the basics in the curricular areas and to teach them very well.  I like to compare it to a strong foundation of a house.  With a strong foundation, many possibilities exist for the rest of the house.  With a weak foundation, the possibilities are limited and may not even hold up.  Our faith is our foundation.  Catholic education is unique not only in the areas of religious teachings, but it is bringing the religious teachings into the everyday living.

Our children are well prepared for unlimited possibilities.  With a strong foundation in reading, math and the other subject areas, Jesus walks beside them in everything they do.  They are taught respect which is so lacking in our society today.  They are taught to treat each other with respect and kindness that in turn will come back to them.  As they learn their subject matter and they learn their faith, they will be able to climb any mountain they encounter.  Jesus guides them up and Jesus guides them back down.

Consider Catholic education for your children and consider it well.  It’s the basics, it’s the religious teachings and values, it’s the quiet atmosphere, and it’s with children whose parents want the best for their children.  The possibilities are endless.  The best is here.  Give your children the education that you can have faith in.

Call the school at any time to arrange for a tour, visit, or to register your children.

May God bless you.

Reading/Language/Phonics:

We worked with the letter ‘x’ last week. I think last weeks letter was the most difficult so far and everyone who had the letter bucket did a great job. Thank you! With so few words that begin with x we worked on words that contained the letter x. Some of the children struggled with the sound that x makes /ks/. In celebration of his birthday, our focus last week was on Dr. Seuss. We worked in great detail with rhyming words. Dr Seuss books are the perfect place to look for rhyming words!

Monday – Cat in the Hat – After reading the story we made our own Cat in the Hat hats and bow ties and wore them around for the day. We worked on fine motor skills and patterning and made some torn paper hats that are now hanging in the hall. We watched the video of The Cat in the Hat.

Tuesday – Green Eggs and Ham – We searched the story for all the rhyming words we could find, our list was very long.  We talked about who Dr, Seuss was and what his real name is.. We watched the video of the story and for snack we had green eggs and ham. Many of the children enjoyed the green eggs and asked for seconds.

Wednesday – Horton Hatches an Egg – One Fish Two Fish – After reading the stories we did more rhyming practice.  We looked at and talked about Dr. Seuss’ style of illustrating his stories. We watched the stories of Horton and One Fish Two Fish. Lastly we made fish like creatures the way we thought that Dr. Seuss would draw them. They are hanging in the hall on the bulletin board.

Thursday – The Sneetches -The Lorax – – If you know the story of the Sneetches you know that it really talks about being fair to all people no matter what they look like or how they speak. After reading the story we talked about treating every one in a fair manner.

We read the story of the Lorax and watched the video and compared the two.  We talked about what the stories ‘lesson’ was and decided together that we need to take care of the earth around us if we are going to live in it.  We made our class book this week about that lesson and chose a seed that we would plant.

As you can see we were very busy with Dr. Seuss last week and I was very impressed with the way the children were picking out the stories and reading them to themselves. Dr. Seuss is a great tool for beginner readers because of the rhymes and repetition. His silliness makes the children love the stories.

Math:

We continued chapter 7 and number patterns last week. We continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s and by 10’s and by 5’s. We count to 20 or 30 by 2’s.  Some of the children really have this down pat already!  We charted which Dr. Seuss books were our favorites.

Other fun things in class:

·        We had our monthly prayer service.  This month we are working on being Faithful. Not only praying and attending church but also having faith in ourselves and each other.

·        We had our second JA lesson from Mrs. Geiser.

·        We are practicing our petitions for Tuesday’s Mass.

·        We created x-ray X’s for our alphabet books.  Only 6 more letters before we work on putting our books together.
