Holy Rosary Parish Council

April 21, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Council members present: Tim Shininger, Father Dick Fleischman, Jim Lippe, Art Ternes, Joe Klein, Dan Schommer, Don Hamm, Phil Lundman, Chris Geiser, Bernadette Ruckdashel, and Jo Ann Wagner.

Opening Prayer: The opening prayer was led by Art.

Minutes: Minutes of the March 17, 2008, Parish Council meeting were approved as presented on a MOTION by Bernadette, seconded by Dan, and carried.

Prayer and Worship: No meeting was held.

Human Concerns: No meeting.

Finance: Jim reported that the Finance Committee is working on the 2008 - 2009 budget. They are projecting a deficit of $80,000 to $90,000. The final budget will be presented next month. The current balance sheet and year to date profit and loss statement was reviewed. A part time maintenance position has been budgeted for during the next fiscal year.

Buildings and Grounds: Dan stated that a sink is leaking downstairs and will be fixed tomorrow. The windows upstairs have been fixed. Jim reported that a bathroom upstairs also needs repair.

PART TIME MAINTENANCE POSITION: A job description has been created. The position will be discussed with the Finance Committee again next month. The position would be posted with a start date July 1st or later (the new fiscal year). This person will also create a manual for the job. Art reported that the water has been turned on at St. Mary’s. The chapel will be used for the First Communion party and the supplemental insurance has been paid.

Education: Chris reported that the committee has recommended a person for the ½ time principal position. K-3 and K-4 enrollment is down. The new principal will work on a recruitment program for the school. A new brochure for the school is available.

Pastor’s Report: Father Dick reminded the council that motions can only be made at a council meeting when the priest is present. The Faith in the Future campaign will begin in July at Holy Rosary. Two people will be needed to chair the campaign. Our contribution will be based on a percent of revenue from the past fiscal year. A calling committee will call every member of the parish including the "inactive" list. All council members were encouraged to attend one of the Faith in our Future meetings scheduled in April and May.

Parish Photographs: Tim had nothing new to report but will contact Olan Mills.

Parish Festival: Jim stated he is still looking for a band. Bernadette stated that a Bingo license will require a minimum of ten people to work, a "number board", a minimum prize of $1,000, and taxes paid on the receipts. The supply company noted that if we do not charge for the cards and the prizes are donated, a license is not needed. Equipment would still need to be rented. It was noted that we need to be compliant with the law. It was suggested that $400 or so be used for prizes with scrip being the prize of choice. A 4:00 p.m. mass will be held at Holy Cross for the festival. Tents have been ordered.

Tri Parish Plan Committee Survey: Tim presented a summary of the comments received from the Tri Parish Plan Committee survey. 120 surveys were received with 50% of them from members 60 years old or older. Two thirds attend one of the tri-parish chapels 100% of the time. There was very little support for one parish. The Tri-Parish Council meetings will begin again in a few months - probably on a Wednesday night.

Parish Council Nominations: A few nomination forms have been received. They can be returned to the parish office until April 28, 2008. The election will be held May 10 and 11th.

Policy for Use of Parish Facilities: The proposed form for use of parish facilities was reviewed. Two changes were suggested - The fee for use of the facility is a minimum contribution of $50 and it is clarified on the form that the person requesting use needs to be a member of the Holy Rosary parish or parish cluster. With these changes, the form was accepted on a MOTION by Phil, seconded by Jo Ann, and carried.

Closing Prayer: Art led the council in the closing prayer.

Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2008.

The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
