Holy Rosary Parish Council
May 19, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. Members present: Tim Shininger, Father Dick Fleischmann, Don Hamm, Joe Klein, Bernadette Ruckdashel, Jim Lippe, Phil Lundman, Jo Ann Wagner, and Chris Geiser. Members excused: Dan Schommer, and Art Ternes. Also present: Terry Mahler.
Opening Prayer: The opening prayer was led by Tim.
CCD Family Program: Terry Mahler, from Our Lady of the Lake Parish, explained the family CCD program which Random Lake is implementing this year. The program meets two times each month from October to Easter on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. The family participates with group teaching from 8:15 to 9:15 and a family project at 9:15. The program will be open to members from the cluster parishes and in return the cluster parishes are asked to open their traditional CCD programs to members from Random Lake who may not want to participate in the Family Program. The council felt this could be a good option.
Minutes: Minutes of the April 21, 2008, parish council meeting were approved as presented on a MOTION by Chris, seconded by Bernadette, and carried.
Prayer and Worship: Phil reported that the committee reviewed the Easter season and discussed possible changes for the future.
Human Concerns: Joe reported on the May 14th meeting. They are discussing a fund raiser for the next mission trip, possibly a brat fry and/or bake sale. The Respect Life Committee raised funds with a bake sale and bottle collection. They may affiliate with a center in north Milwaukee as there are some issues with the West Bend center. Twenty flower plants were distributed at Easter. They will again collect school supplies. After discussion, a MOTION was made by Phil, seconded by Jim, to require all parish committees that raise/spends funds to make an annual financial report to the Parish Council. Motion carried.
Finance: The Profit and Loss statements were reviewed along with the proposed budget. Discussion followed. A MOTION was made by Phil, seconded by Bernadette, to recommend to the Finance and Education Committees that credit card payments be accepted. Motion carried. A MOTION was made by Chris, seconded by Joe, to approve the proposed budget as presented with minor changes as discussed. Motion carried.
Buildings and Grounds: The report from Dan was reviewed. Light bulbs are being changed to energy efficient bulbs.
The resignation of Joan Steffen from the St. Rose Building Committee was accepted. A thank you will be sent to Joan for all her time and effort.
The part time maintenance position is included in the 2008-2009 budget. An ad will be put in the bulletin. Applications will be reviewed by Jim, he will then consult with Father Dick. The ad will also be placed in the cluster parish bulletins.
Education: Enrollment in K-3 and K-4 is down. All grades scored well on the Iowa Basic tests. A reading specialist will be available to work with teacher identified students over the summer. They would meet four times a week for four weeks at a cost of $100 per student. A cell phone / electronic policy has been adopted. The contract with the principal has been signed.
Pastor’s Report: Tim will send a letter of appreciation to Gerry Maleug for his work as principal. He will continue as a deacon.
Parish Photographs: Olan Mills has been contacted. They are tentatively scheduled for October or November.
Tri-Parish Plan Committee: Nothing new to report.
Parish Council Nominations: Thirteen members were nominated. Two have agreed to be on the ballot. Two more names have been submitted and will be contacted. Jim Lippe will remain as trustee.
Concert: A parishioner has contacted Katie and would like to do a benefit concern for the parish. Consensus of the council was to proceed with this. Discussion followed on charging an admission of $5 or $10 or asking for a free will offering.
Parish Festival: The parish festival is June 21st. The band Back Track has been hired at a cost of $500. The festival will be run much the same as last year. A mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Cross on June 21st. The festival will start about 3:00 p.m. A kickball tournament is planned.
Archdiocese Capital Campaign Project: Father Dick explained that the Capital Campaign project will start in August or September. Information was given to each council member to review. A meeting will be held with the consultant on June 12th at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Rosary. Phil commented that we need to get the people involved, put together the story of our parish, and communicate with the parishioners.
