for the week of 3-8-10– 3-12-10
Math We are continuing to practice telling time and problem solving by working ahead in time by minutes and hours. Many of the children had difficulty with chapter 14 and will need further review on these concepts. We will also start Chapter 15 on Understanding Time. We will move quickly through this chapter since we do calendar work every day. The Chapter 15 test will be Monday, March 15th.
Reading/ Phonics The Unit tests were completed last week and I was pleased to see how well the children did. It is wonderful to see that their hard work and effort has resulted in great test scores.
This week we will begin Unit 2 with the story “The Bremen Town Musicians.” The work for this story will be on summarizing, following directions in various texts, and the suffixes “ly” meaning “in a way of” and “ful” meaning “full of”. The phonics this week will focus on the “are” sound as in scare, the “or” sound as in short, the “ore” sound as in store, and the “ear” sound as in hear.
English This week we will work on the singular pronouns I, she, it, and you, the plural pronouns we, you, and they, and reviewing using quotation marks.
Spelling The words for this week have the “k” sound spelled “c” as in come, “k” as in work, and “ck” as in luck. The high frequency words are use and water. .
Religion This week we are beginning Chapter 16 titled, Gather to Worship which discusses the mass, the assembly, and the order of the introductory rites at mass. We will also be learning about St. Patrick and the holy trinity.
Social Studies We are beginning Unit 3 on A Working World. The children are learning about goods and services and their differences. We are also learning about flow charts and will be making a flow chart about their Riveredge field trip on March 9th.
Last week Mrs. Geiser presented the JA activity about unit and assembly line production. The children experienced how the two types of production can create a product. Mrs. Geiser and the children also discussed if the parents, in their job, gave a service, made a product, or did both. The children are really enjoying this program that Mrs. Geiser has enhanced. We again thank her for her time and effort.
Science/Health In Science we are learning about stars and constellations. This week the children will have the opportunity to create their own constellation in a Science/Art activity. In Health we are learning about food varieties and balanced meals that show how we need to eat a rainbow of healthy foods!
Remember to send warm clothes with your child on Tuesday, 3/9 for the Riveredge Nature Center field trip. Bookmobile books should be brought to school on Tuesday. The 5th/6th graders will return them for us.
