Reading/Language/Phonics:
We worked with the letter ‘Y’ last week. I want to thank those of you who had the letter bucket last week and those of you getting the letter bucket this week. Some of the letters are more difficult than others but the bucket has been filled and the children really enjoy both when it is their turn to share and when they get to see what was brought in the bucket. We continued to work on our ABC strips. Some of the class has theirs hanging next to our straw alphabet letters. We will finish those off this week. For our class book last week we did a story using our 100th day of school theme. I copied a $100 bill and the children each wrote and drew what they would buy if they had $100. It is funny to see the price some of the children put on things. We will be decorating the letter ‘Y’ with yarn for our alphabet books. The children will choose which color(s) they wanted and how they wanted to place the yarn. With a snow day and a late start we couldn’t quite fit everything into our week.
Math:
We started chapter 7 last week. This chapter deals with number patterns and skip counting (counting by 5’s, 10’s and 2’s). We continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s, by 10’s and by 5’s. The children are getting very good at it. In chapter 7 we will start counting by 2’s also. We also continue reviewing shapes. We worked on counting to 100 in many ways on the 100th day of school. We took 100 large steps to see how far we could go and then we took 100 tiny steps to see if the distance was the same. We also jumped up and down 100 times.
Religion:
We learned about Saint Valentine for Valentines Day. We also talked about different ways we can show love. We made some Valentine wreaths and they are hanging downstairs for the fish fry.
Other fun things in class:
· We made some cool Valentines for our buddies and we played Valentine Bingo on Friday with them.
· We planned to ‘put away’ the Alleluia at Tuesday’s Mass. Because of the snowstorm we decided to go to Friday’s mass and 8 of the K5 students processed in with the word “Alleluia” and put it into a basket. We do this because the masses during Lent do not use the word Alleluia in them until Easter Sunday. We will rejoice again after Easter with the Alleluia because the Lord has risen!
· 100’s chart game – the children work in groups of 3 or 4 and each child had a 100’s chart. They start on the number one and roll a die and move a marker the number that they rolled. The first student to reach 100 wins.
· On Friday we “mailed” all of our Valentines and spent time looking at our goodies and eating treats during our own Valentines party. Thank you to the families that provided our special Yummy snacks for the day!
· Our Friday snack was yellow jello for the letter Y.
