THIRD GRADE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Jan. 5-9, 2009
Reading/Lang. Arts: This week we are going to practice how to write a persuasive letter. The students are to persuade me that winter is the most wonderful season of the year. (This will certainly take some persuasion!)
We will also begin our next story entitled “The Patchwork Quilt.” The skills we will be practicing are: Making inferences, vocabulary, comprehension, main idea, using a diagram, and multiple-meaning words.
In Grammar we will be learning about past tense verbs and using commas in sentences.
Math: This week we will begin a unit on telling time. Since our world of digital clocks, many students are having a difficult time when they have to look at a round clock with hands! Please practice this skill at home using words like half past, quarter after, quarter till, and o’clock.
Please remember to keep studying daily for the Multiplication Football each day!!!!!!!!!
Spelling: Next week we will be working with words that have the “ou” and “oi” sounds. The high frequency words for this week will be: grandma and once.
Science: I have changed my original plan of studying rocks this week to learning about changes in force and motion. We will learn about rocks and soil earlier in spring. This unit has many fun experiments to perform in learning about how things move and what affect forces have on objects.
Social Studies: We will begin our unit on the Spanish Mission and the geography of San Francisco. We will also discuss the Gold Rush of 1848, and how this location affected the early Native Americans and how they lived.
Religion: We will begin Chapter 7 this week and learn about how to share the Good News with others.
