Rosemary School Second Grade News
for the week of 11-17-08 – 11-21-08
Math In Chapter 8 we are studying 2-digit addition. The children are practicing two digit addition with regrouping the ones as tens. They are also learning to rewrite two digit numbers in columns for addition. We will work with graph paper to help them line up the ones and tens columns. Please help with this at home also. In problem solving we are looking for word problems with too much information. The children will learn to cross off information that is not needed and then use the remaining information to complete the work. The Chapter 8 test will be Monday, November 24, 2008.
Reading/ Phonics The story of the week is “Jamaica Tag-Along”. The children are learning to make inferences by using what you know to answer questions. We are also working on compound words and reading diagrams. The phonics sounds of the story are the ar sound as in arm, ir as in dirt, er as in her, and ur as in curl.
English We are learning about Possessive Nouns. It can be confusing to the children because they interchange the plural nouns with the possessive nouns. The possessive nouns show ownership. The singular possessives add an apostrophe and an s such as: the boy’s cap. The plural possessives may already have an s and then just add the apostrophe, such as: all the boys’ bikes. It helps to look for clues in the sentences to determine if the possessive noun is singular or plural and then add ‘s or just the apostrophe.
The children have been working hard making holiday cards for those who are in the military. We sent off a large envelope to a military unit last week. We also included cards in a box of items with Mrs. Lynn’s class to several military servicemen from our area. God bless our troops!
Spelling This week’s spelling words are the phonics sounds of ar, ir, er, and ur as stated in the reading section. This week’s High Frequency words are many and some.
Religion We are working on the preparation for Reconciliation and practicing the Act of Contrition. Please help your child in memorizing this prayer for the oral and written test during the week of December 9, 2008. A copy of the prayer was given in last week’s folder. It is also in the back of their religion book.
We are beginning Unit 4 on the Church Celebrates. Chapter 10 begins the unit with signs of love. The children will learn the seven sacraments and what each sacrament celebrates. This week please send a picture of your child’s baptism to share with the class (send it in an envelope marked with your name on the outside). The Chapter 10 test will be Monday, November 24, 2008.
Social Studies We are studying Native Americans, colonists, and colonies in three areas in early America. They are: the area of Florida – St. Augustine and the Timucua; Virginia – Jamestown and the Powhatan; and Massachusetts – Plymouth and the Wampanoag. We have been enjoying hearing about and seeing the projects as the children share them. They have done a wonderful job!
Science/Health We are learning about how animals stay safe, how they grow and change, and the various life stages. In Health we are learning the 5 senses and how to protect our senses from harm.
