THIRD GRADE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Nov. 17-21, 2008

Reading/Lang. Arts:  This week we will be reading the story entitled “Spiders At Work.”  The skills we will focus on are important/unimportant information, vocabulary, comprehension, using a dictionary, drawing conclusions, and antonyms and synonyms.

In Grammar we will be learning singular and plural possessive nouns.  We will also begin a new creative writing assignment about planning a Thanksgiving dinner from a turkey’s point of view.

Math:  We will continue to learn multiplication facts this week.  The students are doing well at using tricks to remember some of the more difficult facts.  We will be having an evaluation of the 6’s on Tuesday this week, and will also begin learning the 7’s and 8’s.  These usually take more time to memorize, so please continue to practice these facts daily at home.

Spelling:  We will be practicing words that are plurals this week.  It is important to remind your child to use the rules of adding “es” to words that end with a ch, sh, or x, changing the “y” to an “I” before adding es, and just adding an “s” to words that end with an “e” or a consonant followed by a vowel.

Science:  We will begin a unit of Health this week.  The unit will focus on the three types of health:  Social, Physical, and Emotional and Intellectual.  This is a fun topic to do role-playing for everyday situations that students encounter.

Social Studies:  We will continue to research and learn more about Native American tribes and how they used their natural resources to survive. Hopefully everyone was able to find information on the internet for your child’s tribe.  “Facts for Kids” is a great link to print after you Google the tribe’s name.  The kids will begin to write their notes this week to later expand on in their final report.

Religion:  We will be completing Chapter 5 this week which includes how the Church worships.  The test for this material will be on Thursday, Nov. 20th.  Don’t forget the food pantry as we are getting closer to Thanksgiving!
