*Look What We Are Up To In 3rd Grade!

September 24-28, 2007

 

Reading/Lang. Arts:  This week we will read a story titled  “Opt: An Illusionary Tale.”  The skills we will be practicing are:  Steps in a process, vocabulary, comprehension, using a table of contents, story elements, and prefixes using “un” and “dis.”  This story also allows us to have some fun looking at optical illusions.

 

In Grammar we will be identifying subjects in a sentence and using correct letter punctuation and capitalization.

 

Math:  This past week we began place value by identifying odd and even numbers, as well as writing expanded and standard forms with numbers up to the hundred-thousand place value.  This is appearing to be difficult for some students.  Please review this concept with your child before the test on Wednesday, Sept. 26^th.  

 

We will then begin using those place value skills to compare numbers in value from greatest to least and least to greatest.

 

Spelling:  This week we will practice words with the long O and long I patterns.  The high frequency words for this week will be “kind” and “enough.”

 

Science:  We have been discussing the differences between a food chain and food web.  We will continue this and learn about how animals and plants depend on one another in a variety of ways.

The test for this material will be on Friday, Sept. 28^th.

 

Social Studies:  We have completed our study of the continents, oceans, compass rose, and the three types of communities.  We will now begin Chapter One which introduces us to different communities that are rural, suburban, and urban.

 

Religion:  We have been discussing how we as people make up the church community and how we are called to serve the church in a variety of ways.  We will complete chapter two and be ready for the test on Thursday, Sept. 27^th.
